Just Math Mathalli
I am here with one more Kannada song of Shreya which was most awaited from my side.Shreya tweeted about recording a Kannada song with Raghi Dixit.I was completely amazed because I have really enjoyed previous songs of Raghu(have not heard many).I knew he was talented.Anywayz, the song was out some 2-3 days ago and its titled "Yello Jhinugiruva" and its from the movie "Just Math Mathalli".
Coming to the track,we can call it as a Shreya solo(though its a duet) as Raghu has sung as a chorus voice. The song is melodious, but still supported by western beats. The track starts with a folkish kinda tune played on Guitar followed by Raghu's humming and amazing beats(which continues in the song further). The combination of the those beats and Shreya's singing is perfect. She starts with the song amazingly and the track also has slight carnatic flavor(specially in the antaras). The charnams are outstanding. The starting of the beats after Shreya's first line of the stanza is great.Hats off !!..Shreya has put so much feel into the song.Raghu has supported Shreya very well in the song.Well, the composer has used flute, gitar, etc in the song.I've never heard a song of this kind. Its very unique and have become one of my favorites Kannada song of Shreya.Hope we get to hear Shreya again with Raghu very soon.
Hats off once again !!
ps:I would like to congratulate one of my great friends Kiran Raj who met none other than our Nightingale Shreya Ghoshal yesterday at the Bangaluru Concert :)..I am very happy for him. :)...God Bless

Salaam Aaya - Veer
Shreya is back with Sajid - Wajid in an upcoming movie "Veer".It stars Salman Khan & Zarine Khan.Shreya has a duet with Roopkumar Rathod in the movie titled "Salaam Aaya".It runs for 5 minutes approximately.
The song is a mindblowing melody what we usually do not get from Sajid - Wajid. It starts with a beautiful piece played on Sarod(not sure). The male singer starts with his tempered vocals and I feel the track has li'l 90s touch.Shreya's voice is a complete treat to hear. She comes at 0:50 singing singing "Jab bole vo jab bole..".
Its a dreamy song, amazing interludes, amazing instruments.Every part of the song is mesmerising.I am very happy that the duo Sajid - Wajid tried something different(anywayz,it was needed for this movie). The interludes are beautiful, specially the chorus part is amazing supported by awesome piece played on Sitar.I don't know what should I write about Shreya's singing. She's the best. The lyrics by Gulzar(my favorite lyricist) are out of the world,as usual, specially the lines "Tere Bina Dil Bhi Dhadakta Hai,Tere Bina Saans Bhi Chalt Hai....Yaad nahi tha Yaad aaya" are great.Shreya has a little more to sing in the last antara. The ending of the sog is done by Shreya amazingly singing "Salaam Aaya".
Must hear track !!
ps:Track list of Vinnai Thaandi Varuvaya is out and Shreya has a track titled "Mannipaaya" and its a duet with AR Rahman.I am sure it will be a treat to hear

Shreya Ghoshal's musical journey in 2009
For many years, two or three singers shared the top slot in female playback. Now there seems to be only you. How does that feel?
I don’t think that’s true. But yes, songs are being made specifically and specially with me in mind. From time to time there is always a change in the way music is made and used, depending upon the kind of films being made too. So, I am somehow associated with the more melodious or soft kind of songs that require a classical voice.
What have you to say about the fact that the proper, true-blue playback singers’ ratio of songs has come down, and that anybody and everybody sings for Hindi films today?
I think that proper playback singers have always been there in the best of songs. Yes, there is a lot of experimentation going on with things like voice, tones and singing and some of these voices are doing good work. Luck plays a huge role in a singer’s career and so does the quality and likeability of his or her voice and singing style. The good people among such talents need to come in too. But the trend is that people love every new voice, like I am amused when someone like Atif Aslam gets so much work. My own brother likes him, and I don’t know why and how? I suppose it has to do with some exotic new tenor, but for me there is no substitute for proper singing. Please do not misunderstand me – I have nothing against any nationality. Adnan Sami , for example , adds something to every song he sings and he is also a very talented composer.
This phenomenon, luckily is more amongst male singers, where even most of the music directors are singing?
True, but what a singer can add to a song, a music director may not be able to match, despite the song being his creation. But it's not as if Sunidhi Chauhan and I and all of us are that lucky- we have very little songs to sing now, compared to male singers! Tum Mile and Rocket Singh are the examples.
What about the change in equation-first ranks the sound, hooks and grooves, then the novel voice and lastly the lyrical value and compositional caliber, when good music always has exactly opposite priorities?
I don’t think that good lyrics will ever go out of fashion. Yes, some people have this problem, but there are others who get around even these obstacles in clever ways. Like Vishal Bharadwaj adopts today’s trends in his own unique way and it sounds great - the music has caliber and is accepted. We have to understand here, that a lot of the old songs were too loud and over dressed. The trend today is to keep sound arrangements sparse and clean, unless a huge sound is really needed for a song. A classic example for this is Himesh Reshmiyaji’s Radio. Today’s major music directors have brought in this really refreshing change. The right dressing for a song is important. Having said that, I agree that today’s musical requirements are as much based on fixed ideas as in olden times- they want two songs for the pubs, one romantic track, one Punjabi and one hip-hop number, because that’s what works now-a-days.
What kind of difference do you see in today’s music and old music? Which kind of music you like to listen to?
I am a classical singer and love singing and listening to classical. At the same time, I am into today’s world, where it is competitive, and I love singing pop music too, which actually doesn’t suit my voice much. But I guess the songs which have raag, I mean the songs based on classical singing, are pretty close to my heart. But there are another kind of songs too … like today’s music. Few songs become more hit only for a time span and then you forget them.
You also sing regional songs, how do you manage to sing in those languages which you don’t know?
Yes, I have sung in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Marathi, Bhojpuri and others. These are the languages which I don’t know. I have also sung in Bengali, but that’s my mother tongue. Singing a song is not too difficult, you can write it in Hindi or in which ever language you are comfortable in and get the pronunciation right. It depends upon the music composer too and how well he can guide you; so it’s not so difficult.
You have sung so many songs till date but which one is close to you? As in, which of your song you think is the best till date?
There are so many, I actually don’t even remember all the songs. But right now I can remember Mere Dholna from Bhool Bhulayiya was one of my best songs. Almost all songs from Devdas too, as I established myself in the industry after Devdas only. But let me tell you that my film Antaheen, which is a Bengali film album had an unplugged sound that went against the trend and was more of an album. It was top of the charts for 27 weeks. The music was by Jeet Ganguly, who is currently doing a fantastic job.
What is the difference between Shreya in her Devdas, Jism and Saaya days and the Shreya of today?
Well, as a singer, I have definitely grown. My voice has changed from the girlish tenor of those days and I have acquired some knowledge and experience that makes me enjoy my work more. I am now able to give some inputs to a song, and this helps especially the new composers while it also gives me immense pleasure in contributing to my song. I can say it with confidence now - that I now have a sound of my own.

Pal Mein Hi - Chance Pe Dance
Finally,it’s the time to write about Shreya’s latest released song from Ken Ghosh’s “Chance Pe Dance”.The movie stars Shahid Kapoor and Genelia D’Souza.Shreya has sung a duet with Soham Chokroborty titled “Pal Mein Hi".Music is composed by Adnan Sami.
The track runs for 4 minutes approx. It starts with beautiful piece played on Piano(which comes many times in the song) and Guitar follows it later. Its a romantic track with a modern(or say italic) touch to it.Soham starts with the song singing in low notes and finishes his lines with high notes.Shreya follows those lines after Soham finishes. We get to see a different versatile Shreya here. She has modulated her voice to see the theme of the song(Well, thats a easy task for her). The song may remind you of Pyar Se from Mumbai Salsa. The antaras are very beautiful ,specially the starting lines by Shreya are amazing.Lyrics of the song are also very appealing.Soham has given good company to Shreya. The gitar piece in the song is put of the world and needless to say,Shreya's singing is the most appealing part of the song.Note the way Shreya ends the song.I am sure the song is going to rock(actually, already rocking these days).
ps:There is also a sad version of Rang Diya Dil and I’ve written about it in the previous post.

Rang Diya Dil - Dulha Mil Gaya
I am here with my next post. I am going to talk about the latest Hindi release of Shreya i.e. Rang Diya Dil from the movie Dulha Mil Gaya. The movie was supposed to release in early 2009 , but due to some problems, they are releasing it in early 2010.Anywayz,Shreya has a solo in the movie.Music is composed by Lalit Pandit of the duo Jatin – Lalit.
Shreya’s last association with Lalit Pandit i.e.Showbiz was superb , though it didn’t get its due.Well, she is back with him in an upcoming movie “Dulha Mil Gaya” .Its titled "Rang Diya Dil".It runs for 5 minutes 25 seconds. Its a romantic song having Jatin-Lalit stamp all over.To proceed with the whole song, let me tell you its a masterpiece sung beautifully by our Shreya like always.Shreya starts with the song singing "Rang Diya Dil Maine Pyar Wale Rang Gholna".......The song is for someone who is madly in love.I am completely addicted to the track.Shreya's humming , her feel , style, everything is superb as usual. The song is supported by traditional instruments like flute , dholak , santoor, etc. The line "jaan bhi gayi tere hi sang dholna" is amazing. The antaras are beautiful. The song also has a slight(very slight) classical flavor to it.The lyrics are also great.Note the way Shreya sings "Ranjhana" before the third antara(Yes,it has 3 antaras). The line "Tere Hi Sang Dholna" comes many times in the song and Shreya has sung it differently everytime.Well,I don't know what else should I write about the song.Don't miss this song folks !!
The song also has a sad version which runs for 50 seconds and it runs on the lines of the main version(antara). Its very soothing and Shreya has put so much feel into the song. These sad versions are always very special for me,be it Tujhe Rab Dikhta Hai or “Kash Ek Din” sad version , etc
Hats off to Shreya and the composer too !

Neethone - Adhurs
Well , I am quite late in posting about this Telugu song. Anyway,I am not too late.Lets come to the song.
The song is titled “Neethone”.Its from the movie “Adhurs”.Music is composed by Devi Sri Prasad. Shreya’s last association with Devi Sri was Tu Tu Tu from the movie Ready.
And Neethone somewhat falls in the same category. Its sung by the same set of singers, Kunal Ganjawala and our Shreya. The song is little short. It runs for 3 minutes 50 seconds. Its a peppy number. As I said, it falls in the same category of Tu Tu Tu. Shreya starts with the song first and proves her versatility again. The song is of course, supported by western beats. The interludes of both the antaras are fantastic.Shrya’s singing between 3:14 – 3:25 is mindblowing.Kunal Ganjawala has done great work too.Though this is a usual peppy song, the thing to look at is “how versatile our Shreya is” !
Hope you enjoy the track !
ps:Posts of Dulha Mil Gaya and Chance Pe Dance are coming very soon !

Maleyali Jotheyali - Revised
One of my friends Supreet in Twitter tweeted me regarding the second song of Shreya in "Maleyali Jotheyali".Supreet told me that Shreya also had one more song in Maleyali Jotheyali.Well, thanks to him, otherwise I would never have been able to hear the song.As far as the songs of other languages(except Hindi) are concerned , I just hear the songs by Shreya and I don't know why Shreya was not credited for her second song in Maleyali Jotheyali.Anyways, lets come to the song.
The song is titled "Yenu Helabeku".Its a duet sung by Shreya Ghoshal and Sonu Niigaam. It runs for 5 minutes.Music is composed by V.Harikrishna.Its a romantic track. Before telling anything else , let me tell you the mukhda of the song is highly inspired from "Teri Ore" from Singh is King.Even the instrument is same here and the beats are almost similar.Except the beats, the main content of the song is different. Its a romantic track.Sonu Nigam has given good company to Shreya .Shreya has overshadowed the male singer in the whole song. The antaras of the songs are beautiful and the interlude before the second stanza is great , specially the chorus part singing "Ole Ole Ole Na Re Na Re".The starting lines of the antaras are slightly high pitched and note for the small alaaps Shreya sings in the second stanza.
Overall, a great song which we would have missed. Thanks to Supreet once again.

Balance music and education :Shreya Ghoshal
At an age when most of the youngsters step into phase of their career , Bollywood singer Shreya Ghoshal has almost everything - fame, money and success but the artist says she doesn't want the young breed of music aspirants to follow in her footsteps.
Says the bubbly singer who was in Jaipur to audition contestants for a music reality show, “A lot of budding singers who came for the auditions today were hardly 18 to 20 year olds. Though I started very early, I wouldn’t like them to follow my example. It is not the time to get into music but learn as much as one can and complete one’s education because one’s grasping power is at its peak. One must make the most of it, instead of getting commercial mileage out of music.” And though she has learnt her music really well, she agrees that she did miss out on all the college fun. “I did miss the fun that college life has in store for youngsters, but I didn’t compromise on my academics.” And for being able to strike the right balance between her education and music she gives all the credit to her family.
She feels that every parent must know where to stop the child. “I managed to pull it off and complete my graduation because my family is very well educated, so that inclination was always there. And my family always supported me and took the right decisions on my behalf as I was too young to do so. However in many families, once the child gets into music, the whole focus shifts to just that. These days parents have a lot of expectations from their children, they think once their ward has stepped into the music industry he must become a superstar. Parents must know where to draw the line and in case one’s family isn’t that supporting one must use one’s own discretion,” stresses Shreya.
However, she isn’t against reality shows. “The whole format of reality shows is amazing. It offers a different kind of entertainment, has enormous reach and audience involvement. Earlier aspiring singers would long for a single break to get a foothold in the music industry but today courtesy these shows, a lot of newcomers are getting popularity and work. Also, the financial pressure is off them. But only those who are focussed prove to be winners,” says the crooner, who was born in Rawatbhata near
She adds the desert state has lots of talent. “The internal buzz in this reality show is that the best of talent comes from Rajasthan because music is in the blood of the people here. And the talent is unique because everybody is so grounded.”
Not many know that apart from music it’s cooking that helps to de-stress her. “I love to travel and read books but it’s cooking that has a healing effect on me. Whenever I am not well I cook something nice and the aroma of the food works wonders for me,” signs off Shreya.
Suryakanthi
Recently,Shreya was asked about her song in Suryakanthi and she said that she has never sung something like this before.Since that day , I have been eagerly waiting for the music release of Suryakanthi. It seems Suryakanthi is the most awaited Kannada movie this year. So,there are greater chances of Shreya's songs getting their due.Music is composed by Ilayaraja.I always expect a lot from Shreya - Ilayaraja combo.Lets come to the songs.
The first track I am going to talk about is Edeya Bagilu(the one which Shreya was talking about in that interview). Its sung by Shreya and Kunal Ganjawala. It runs for 5 and a half minutes. When Shreya has said that she never sang something like this before, then who am I to say anything about this track but just to give you the clue, let me tell you that this track could be a mixture of jazz , karnatic music , etc.Its one of the most beautiful and complicated songs of Shreya - Ilayaraja combo.Shreya is , as usual angelic in the track.Shreya and Kunal are the perfect choices for this track.Ilayaraja has used beautiful instruments like Piano, saxaphone, etc. The harmony in between the antaras by Shreya is the most appealing part of the song.Evereything about this song is beautiful.I don't think I can say anything else about this track.Hats off to Ilayaraja and Shreya !!
Next track is a solo titled "Chan Chanare".It runs for 4 and a half minutes.Remember the tamil song Kuyil Padum sung by Shreya? This song falls in the same category. This track also has kids singing in between.Shreya is sounding very cute in this song.Raja has used saxaphone in most of the part of the song. There's a strange tune played on saxaphone which comes many times in the song. The antaras of the song are great.Shreya has a beautoful harmony before the second stanzaNote the beautful change in the notes after that harmony.
Again , a treat to Shreya fans !!
Hope the songs get their due.
Shreya performs at India Gate
Many celebrities came together to give tribute to all the soldiers who lost their life in Mumbai blast last year.Shreya performed a bangla song there. Its a lovely emotional track. Many celebrities like Shahrukh Khan , Javed Akhtar , Shankar Mahadevan ,etc were present.
Here is the video of Shreya’s performance:
Shreya in "Music Ka Mahamuqabla"
Finally, after a little lul of 15 days,I am here wih the deluge of posts(Yes,3 more are yet to be written). The reason of not posting is not accurate. There are many reasons.Instead of getting into that , lets come to the main point i.e. our Nightingale Shreya is going to be a judge again in a upcoming reality show “Music Ka Mahamuqabla”.There are 6 captains in the show including Shreya.Other captains include Shaan , Shankar Mahadevan , Mika , Himesh Reshammiya and Mohit Chauhan. Some sources say that the captains have alrerady made their teams by selecting known participants of various reality show but Shreya was recently in Jaipur for the audition and she tweeted that she got an outstanding voice.
Well,as one of her biggest fans,I always pray for Shreya and I pray that let everything go smooth in this reality show.
Wishing Shreya all the very best :)
